Stephanie Spikoski General Manager, Certified Pet Care Technician
I was born in the Midwest and
raised on and around farms. Animals have always been a major fixture in
my life and I don't think there has ever been a time that I haven't had
an animal of some sort in my day to day life. I have been playing with
dogs, cats, cows, goats, horses, ferrets, fish, hamsters for as long as
I can remember. I am sure there are even some I was too young to
remember! The first dog I had any part in picking out was Lacey the
Schnauzer. I remember going to pick her out. I first picked the "runt"
of the litter and was advised against it, due to the delicate nature of
the "runt", I was led in the direction of a bigger, stronger pup.
Reluctantly I picked up one that was not much bigger than the "runt"
and was told she would be perfect for me! We took her off to the back
yard and I watched as she play with her siblings and father, while the
other end of the deal was being settled. At 6 I guess I wouldn't have
been much help in this department! For 15 blissful years she filled our
home with joy. During this time we also had a fat tabby cat named,
appropriately enough, Tabby! These two made the ultimate pair, the pup
ate the kitty food and the kitty ate the puppy food. They would
constantly fight and make-up, fight and make-up! But the two were
inseparable and I was in the middle. Even when I got older and
developed and allergy to Tabby, at night my door would be closed so
that she couldn't come in and flair up my allergy. I would sneak over
and open my door and let her back in. The next morning my face would be
swollen and my eyes would be welded closed. But I didn't care I Loved
That Cat! Nine years later she went to sleep and never woke up. I still
miss her today! Over the years I have many pets pass through my door.
Sometimes they were just passing through on their way to a new home and
sometimes they were coming to stay with me. I have taken in strays
along with pets that my friends could not longer tend to. That is how I
got my Ferrets. My friend was moving out of state and couldn't take her
babies with her so I opened my doors to the adorable little critters!
They had the best personalities, and this being my first encounter with
the weasel family, they were the perfect trainers! They were a pair and
couldn't be separated. They would run side by side at full speed
through the house, bouncing and jumping and squeaking! These guys were
so much fun and very mischievous. I guess I have said enough about my
pets, I will say a bit about myself. I have always wanted to find a way
to work with animals, but could never find that perfect job. But when I
did, boy did I land a big one! I am so happy to have this opportunity
to work with such a great staff and such wonderful animals. The
critters that come here are sweet and fun to hang out with. I have
always worked in the food and beverage industry, and although I enjoyed
it, there was always something missing. Now that I am married and
expecting our first baby, I really needed a career that would keep me
at or near home. Well somehow, someway both fell into my lap. This is
the best job that I have ever had!
