Melissa Kennel Technician/Doggie Daycare Attendant (small, shy and senior dogs)
I
have been working at No Place Like Home Pet Resort since October 2007,
but let me start at the beginning. I guess you could say I had a
normal childhood. I grew up on a 72 acre dairy farm in a little place
called Outlook located on the outskirts of Sunnyside, yes that it is in
Washington. I fed calves and heifers, swam in the canal, fished for
gold fish in water troughs, gigged frogs, rode my bike everywhere and
took in any and every cat and dog that came our way.
From
out of my humble beginnings, my interest and passion for wildlife was
sparked. I always knew I wanted to work to protect, conserve and help
everything from our four legged domestic counter parts to exotic
wildlife. Therefore, after high school I entered Eastern Washington
University and received a Bachelors' Degree in Biology.
My
first job out was fishing for USDA predator control. That's right, my
job was to fish for Northern Pike Minnow that would prey on poor baby
salmon in the Columbia River. Next, I decided to try my hand at
something different and flew off to Switzerland to be a nanny. I hiked
the Swiss Alps, learned some French and discovered that working with
some children isn't all that different from working with some dogs.
Last year, I had the opportunity to work for the Washington
Conservation Corps rebuilding salmon habitats. I learned native plant
species, noxious weed, healthy weed control, a large array of handy
trades and on the job problem solving. It was probably the best job
I've ever had, until now.
I
must admit that I never realized how different dogs personalities could
be and the work and time that goes into keeping my four legged friends
happy, healthy and safe. It's been hard work and a learning experience
to be sure, but I wouldn't trade this path for anything.
